History

From plantation to luxury villa neighbourhood.

The name Jan Sofat sounds exotic, but comes from something quite practical: Jan Houtvat — later corrupted to Jan Zoutvat and eventually Jan Sofat. A short timeline.

1715

Plantation Uylenburg is bought

Jan Houtvat buys Plantage Uylenburg from the Dutch West India Company. The plantation soon becomes known as "Plantage Jan Zoutvat", after the owner.

18th century

Farming on the plantation

On Plantage Jan Sofat agriculture is practised, including cotton farming. The plantation changes owners regularly and is commercially not very successful.

1929

Landhuis Brakkeput preserved

Nearby Landhuis Brakkeput Mei Mei is transferred to the Monuments Foundation and later given a function as restaurant and event venue.

1969

Development into villa neighbourhood

Spanish Water Resort N.V. buys the plantation and develops the area into one of Curaçao's first waterfront villa neighbourhoods. Almost all villas get views of the Spanish Water.

1987

Neighbourhood association founded

The Buurtvereniging Jan Sofat is founded with the goal of "creating and maintaining an attractive residential neighbourhood with a safe, healthy and pleasant living climate".
