Rif Mangrove Park Curaçao
Walk a wooden boardwalk through the mangrove forest with a Carmabi guide. Discover the birds, the underwater roots and why mangroves are vital to the island's ecosystem.
A walk through Curaçao's mangrove forest
The Rif Mangrove Park is a unique city park on Curaçao, located near Sint Willibrordus on the south coast. A wooden boardwalk leads over the water through a dense mangrove forest, allowing you to experience the ecosystem up close without wet feet. The park is managed by the Carmabi foundation, dedicated to nature conservation on Curaçao.
A guided tour takes about one hour and is always led by a local guide. Along the way you learn how mangrove roots filter the water, which bird species live in the area, and why this ecosystem is crucial to the island's coastline. The park sits about a 30 minute drive from our villa at the Spanish Water, easy to combine with an afternoon at nearby Cas Abao Beach.
Walk over the water
A wooden boardwalk runs through the entire forest, no mud or wet feet.
Bird watching
Herons, hummingbirds, kingfishers and pelicans live in the area.
Educational guide
Carmabi guides explain the flora, fauna and history of the Rif area.
What you will see during the mangrove walk
Four things the guide will show you during the approximately one hour walk.
The boardwalk over the water
The wooden walkway zigzags through the entire mangrove forest, partly over land and partly over the shallow water. There are several viewpoints where you can stop to spot wildlife. Comfortable for everyone, including strollers and people with reduced mobility.
Birds in their natural habitat
The mangrove forest is a key breeding ground and a true beestjesparadijs for nature lovers. Along the way you will likely see great egrets, kingfishers, pelicans and hummingbirds. Early morning gives you the best chance of spotting something special like a green heron or a frigatebird.
Roots of red and black mangroves
Mangroves have remarkable roots that grow both above and below water. The guide explains the difference between the red mangrove (with stilt roots) and the black mangrove (with breathing roots that look like tiny pegs sticking out of the mud). A living biology lesson.
The Rif area and its history
The surrounding area is called "Rif" and has a long history as a salt production zone and as Willemstad's harbour area. The guide explains how the mangroves have been protected and threatened over the years.

Why are mangroves important?
Three reasons why this ecosystem is vital to Curaçao and the Caribbean.
Coastal protection
Mangrove roots break waves and storms before they reach land. Without mangroves, the Curaçao coastline would erode much faster. During hurricane season, mangroves absorb the first impact.
Water filtration
The roots filter salt and sediment from the water, keeping the water between the reef and the coast clear. This is essential for the coral reef, which depends on clean, clear water.
Nursery for marine life
Many fish species you later see on the coral reef begin their life in the mangrove forest. The roots provide protection for young fish, shrimp and crabs until they are large enough for open sea.
Tips for visiting the mangrove forest
Go in the early morning
Birds are most active in the early morning. It is also cooler then, so you avoid the midday sun on the boardwalk.
Bring insect spray
Especially in the rainy season (October to January) there are mosquitoes. Apply well in advance and wear long sleeves if possible.
Bring a good camera
Birds and unusual root shapes are worth capturing. A telephoto lens helps with bird photos.
Bring water
There is no shop inside the park itself. Fill a bottle in advance.
Combine with Cas Abao
Cas Abao Beach is less than a 15 minute drive away. A great way to round off the day.
Great for children
The boardwalk and the stories about roots and birds are ideal for curious kids from around 5 years old.
A 30 minute drive from 3 Palabrua
Our villa 3 Palabrua sits right on the Spanish Water in Jan Sofat. From here you reach the Rif Mangrove Park in about 30 minutes by car. Combine well with an afternoon at Cas Abao or a visit to Kura Hulanda in Willemstad.
