Be your own captain on a floating lounge bar

A tiki boat is a round, colourful boat with a thatched palapa roof for shade and an own BBQ on board. You sail in your own group of 4 to 8 people, and you are the captain. The boat has a 4 hp motor for which no boating license is required, so any adult can take the wheel. A 15 minute briefing and you are ready to go.

You sail on the Spanish Water, a calm natural lagoon surrounded by mangroves, luxury villas and small islands. During the trip you can moor at a floating lounge or at the Sandals pier to snorkel. There is a cooler on board for your own drinks. At our villa 3 Palabrua you are literally a 5 minute walk from the departure point, while from most other accommodations you would be 15 minutes or more on the road.

What do you do during a tiki boat trip?

Four things that make sailing the Spanish Water on a tiki boat special.

1

Moor at floating lounges

The rental company has floating loungers and pontoons at several spots in the Spanish Water. You moor up, sit in the sun, have a drink or jump into the water.

2

Snorkel at the Sandals pier

A popular stop is the pier of the Sandals resort, where you can snorkel in clear water among tropical fish. Bring your own mask and fins, as these are not included.

3

BBQ on the water

On board sits a real Cobb BBQ. The rental company optionally provides a complete package with meat, fish or vegetarian options. You are the chef while sailing around or while anchored.

4

Sail through the mangroves

The Spanish Water has several small bays and mangrove channels that a tiki boat can easily explore. With luck you spot pelicans, herons or even a sea turtle.

Tiki Boat or a regular sloop rental?

On the Spanish Water you can rent different types of boats. The tiki boat is unique because of its palapa roof, round design and BBQ. A regular sloop is faster and more agile. Which suits you better?

Tiki Boat

Floating lounge with BBQ

  • Round design, palapa roof for shade
  • 4 hp motor, no boating license needed
  • 4 or 8 people
  • BBQ on board (optional package)
  • 4 hour sailing time
  • From around USD 199 per boat

Luxury sloop

Faster, more agile, no BBQ

  • Classic sloop design
  • Up to 15 hp motor, also no boating license needed
  • Up to 6 people
  • No BBQ, but more speed
  • 3, 4 or 5 hour options
  • From around USD 199 per boat
Tiki boats are perfect if you want a relaxed day on the water with great food and easy drifting. A sloop is better if you actually want to sail, visit several places or are with a smaller group. Both let you explore the Spanish Water at your own pace.

Tips for your tiki boat day

🥤

Fill the cooler well

There is a cooler with ice on board. Fill it generously, because you get thirsty on the water.

🧴

Reef-safe sunscreen

Mind the coral in the bay. Apply before departure, reapply regularly.

🥽

Bring a snorkel set

If you want to snorkel at the Sandals pier, bring mask and fins. Not included in the rental.

📷

Waterproof phone case

For photos on the water without worry. Phones and water do not mix well.

💵

Cash for tips

Plan around USD 10-20 in tips for the crew at departure. Cash works best.

🪒

No license but still sail wisely

Avoid other boats and swimmers. The motor is small but the boat itself is wide.

Stay

What exactly is a tiki boat?
