The most photographed beach on Curaçao

The Grote Knip, in Papiamento Kenepa Grandi, is the most famous beach on Curaçao and for many travellers also the most beautiful. A wide half moon of white sand, enclosed by rock walls, with turquoise water that gradually deepens to a darker blue. This beach appears on nearly every postcard and in every travel guide of the island for good reason.

The Grote Knip is free to access and has all the facilities you would want at a beach: beach beds, palapas for shade, a beach bar and toilets. On top of the cliff sits a viewpoint where you see the entire beach from above, the spot where all the famous photos were taken. From our villa at the Spanish Water the drive takes about 50 minutes.

🏖️

White sand, turquoise water

Wide sandy strip with a gradual entry, suitable for adults and children.

🆓

Free entry

No fee, no reservation. Parking is also free at the main entrance.

Iconic viewpoint

From the cliff on the south side you have the famous panoramic view.

What makes Grote Knip so special?

Four reasons this beach keeps appearing in every "most beautiful beach" list of Curaçao.

1

The iconic clifftop viewpoint

A short walk on the south side of the bay brings you to the top of the cliff. From there you see the entire half moon of white sand and turquoise water below. This is the spot where most photos of Grote Knip are taken. Free to access and best in early morning or late afternoon light.

2

Cliff jumping for the adventurous

From the cliff on the south side many visitors jump into the sea. The water below the cliff is deep enough and jumping has become a tradition. Not for kids, jump at your own risk. Avoid cliff jumping on days with high waves.

3

Full beach facilities

Unlike many smaller beaches on the island, Grote Knip has beach beds, palapas for shade, a beach bar for lunch and drinks, toilets and showers. That makes it one of the most family friendly beaches on Curaçao.

4

Combine with Kleine Knip (Kenepa Chiki)

Less than 5 minutes away sits Kleine Knip (in Papiamento Kenepa Chiki), the smaller sibling of the Grote Knip. Much quieter and great for snorkelling along the rocks. Many visitors combine them in one day.

Grote Knip versus Kleine Knip

Two beaches in the same region, sharing the same name but very different in character. Which one suits you?

Grote Knip (Kenepa Grandi)

The famous, photogenic beach

  • Wide half moon of around 200 meters
  • Full facilities (bar, beds, toilet)
  • Suitable for families and larger groups
  • Cliff jumping on the south side
  • Busier, especially around midday
  • Viewpoint on the cliff

Kleine Knip (Kenepa Chiki)

The quiet sibling, often skipped

  • Smaller, more intimate bay
  • Limited facilities, often only beds
  • Better for snorkelling along the rocks
  • Quieter atmosphere, even in high season
  • Just 5 minutes from Grote Knip
  • No viewpoint, but plenty of charm
Most travellers combine both beaches in one day. Our tip: start the morning at Kleine Knip for snorkelling, have lunch at Grote Knip and finish at the viewpoint for that postcard photo.

Tips for visiting Grote Knip

☀️

Go early

Busiest between 11:00 and 14:00. Early mornings are quiet and the light is perfect for photos.

Crowded on Sundays

Protects the reef. Apply about 20 minutes before entering the water.

💵

Bring cash

Small amounts for beach beds, drinks and toilets are easiest in cash. The card reader does not always work.

📸
